Day 175.  Yesterday while at work, I was doing the usual, checking in an ambulance, when I realized that my patient’s wife had looked familiar.  How did I know this lady? She looked different from the last time I saw her.  Today she was healthy and smiling. Then, it hit me!  I had taken care of her a few weeks ago.  She had the worst case of gastroenteritis I’d ever seen.  I could never forget it.  Presumed food poisoning from the salad bar at IHOP (who gets anything other than pigs in a blanket at IHOP?!).  It was not pretty.  Constant vomiting and diarrhea.  Sometimes simultaneous.  Pretty debilitating for an old gal.  I must have changed her sheets at least 5 times over the course of a few hours.  And she thanked me constantly.  Like TOO much almost.  And she kept saying “you’re so kind.”  This day, her husband was the patient.  She said she brought him here because the nurses were the best.  She also told me the ambulance drove past an IHOP and she thought about that day and wouldn’t it be just wonderful if I got to see that nurse again who took such great care of me!  And she did.  I felt so honored and privileged to take care of her husband.  Hearing her kind words yesterday is exactly what I needed at that moment.  So I hugged her and gave her this card.
