Truths & Love

Day 129.  I love me a good ol’ grumpy grandma from the retirement community patient. Immediately, I make it my ultimate challenge to change her mood from crotchety to smiles.  If not with my cheery self, than definitely with a quote card.  This was my patient today.  Didn’t want to be in the ER for her resolved stroke symptoms.  Was fine, now.  Get over it, Grandma.  You’re getting a head CT and blood work at least.  So after all that was said and done with my smiliest self shining through, I sat and talked to Ms. Grumpy about her life, her kids, her dead husband, what she liked to do.  Somehow we got on the topic of old school movies and books.  Then I pulled out the quote card and asked her if she knew who Zelda Fitzgerald was.  ”Of course I do.  That’s F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife.  They’re characters in my favorite movie, Midnight in Paris.”  Score!  I actually saw this movie too (although I think I may have fell asleep for a few minutes) so I could totally contribute to the convo!  I read her the Zelda quote (which she hadn’t heard before) and gave her the card and I could tell she kinda liked me but still didn’t smile.  I told her this card would make a great bookmark for all the reading she enjoys. I even went so far as to offer her milk and cookies, which I myself was snacking on.  She ate the cookies even though they “weren’t homemade” — they’re Meijer, lady! Close enough!  Then I sent her back to her retirement community with a belly full of cookies, a new quote card bookmark, and hopefully a little love.
